Virtual World Therapeautic For Addicts:
Study Shows Impact Of Environment To Addiction Cravings

ScienceDaily, Apr. 30, 2008 — Patients in therapy to overcome addictions have a new arena to test their coping skills--the virtual world. A new study by University of Houston Associate Professor Patrick Bordnick found that a virtual reality (VR) environment can provide the climate necessary to spark an alcohol craving so that patients can practice how to say "no" in a realistic and safe setting. UH professor Andrew Achenbaum receives national honor
Achenbaum cited for leadership, in teaching, service of gerontology

HOUSTON, January 22, 2007—Andrew Achenbaum, professor of history and social work at the University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work, is the 2007 recipient of the Donald P. Kent award.

The honor is given by the Gerontological Society of America each year to a person who exemplifies the highest standards for professional leadership in gerontology through teaching, service and interpretation of gerontology to the larger society. [Read more on this story]


National Institutes For Health Grant to Fund Drug Abuse Research at UH
Five-year, $2.3 million initiative to focus on multidisciplinary approach, establish research institute

November 27, 2007—A center dedicated to building the multidisciplinary drug abuse research capacity of the University of Houston is the focus of a five-year, $2.3 million grant awarded to the Graduate College of Social Work’s Office of Drug and Social Policy Research (ODSPR).

Funding for the initiative comes from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), which is part of the National Institutes for Health (NIH). The funds will support the creation of the Minority Institutions’ Drug Abuse Research Development Program (DARDP) at UH. [Read more on this story]

They are girls who are associated with gangs, and the perception from schools, state agencies and even families is that they are beyond help. Avelardo Valdez, University of Houston social work and sociology professor and director of the Office for Drug and Social Policy Research at the Graduate College of Social Work, makes the assertion in his latest book, "Mexican American Girls and Gang Violence: Beyond Risk" (Palgrave Macmillan, 2007). UH Grad Students Head to Austin for Hands-On Lessons In Politics
Participants Hail from Graduate College of Social Work’s
Legislative Internship Program

HOUSTON, Feb. 15, 2007—The political futures of several Houston graduate students begin during the current session of the Texas Legislature. The 11 students were selected from a pool of nearly four dozen to participate in the 2007 Legislative Internship Program at the University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work (GCSW).

“This is a really great opportunity for people who are interested in policy or concerned about human issues in general,” said Anne Casimir, a student of the GCSW and a legislative intern in the Legislative Study Group. “This internship will allow me to be vocal about certain issues that are dear to my heart and will guide me to the path I need to be on so that I can one day be an advocate on human trafficking and immigration issues.” [read more on this story]


UH American Humanics Program Named Tops In Nation
National Group Recognizes Local Program with Excellence Award

HOUSTON, Feb. 9, 2007—A University of Houston program dedicated to meeting community needs and developing future community leaders has been recognized by the American Humanics Management Institute (AHMI) as the best in the country.
