Research Interests:
My broad area of expertise is within the field of child welfare. Within this context, I have focused my research and scholarship in two main areas: assessment and intervention of child maltreatment, and professional development and training of child welfare staff. My first area of specialty is child maltreatment. I began my career focusing on the assessment and identification of neglect in infants and toddlers, and have expanded my work to researching assessment and interventions of child maltreatment, including refining the knowledge base regarding risk factors associated with substantiation such as poverty, young maternal age, and young child age. My second area of specialty is child welfare training and professional development. I have been keenly interested in child welfare workforce retention, training and development throughout my career. The training and retention of child welfare staff is of tremendous importance. Children involved in the child welfare system need a competent, well-trained workforce. High turnover and poorly trained staff compromise service delivery to vulnerable children who deserve more. Building upon my child welfare research experience, I am also currently developing expertise in the area of independent living of foster youth and foster care. Youth aging out of foster care often have few resources, few permanent connections, and lack realistic plans for the future. As a result, these youth often end up homeless, pregnant, unemployed, and in need of assistance. In 2005, I received an Administration for Children Youth and Families/Children's Bureau training grant as co-principal investigator for almost $700,000 over three years to train child welfare supervisors on the needs of youth aging out of foster care.
